Elvira Piedra is an American photographer who works mostly with film. She photographs things that are close to her; the people and things of her home. For Piedra, photography is a means of finding a deeper understanding of her world, and forging greater connections to the things around her. While simultaneously forging a deeper connection to her home, photography allows her to step into a new world of creativity. Piedra is also able to make her inner world visible, and engage her own creativity. Her work becomes harmonized through the process of printmaking and the physical print itself. To Piedra, printmaking is a process of reconciliation and a time for her to reflect on her feelings.
Piedra’s photographic work allows her to become closer to herself, and engage in her own creativity. The intimacy of her photographs allows the viewer to understand this as well, and begin to think about Pierdra’s connection and thought process when taking the photo, as well as developing their own personal meaning. The variety of her subjects evokes a wide range of emotions, drawing out many different feelings from each image, and creating an overall powerful experience when viewing a body of her work.
