Carlos Tarrats photographs metaphorical and abstract still lives, with the main subject being plant life. He tries to construct his images in a way that inspires the viewer to derive their own meaning which may be different from his own. He uses flora in his images because it has no singular connotation; every species has a meaning that is not universal to every culture.
When constructing each image, Tarrats thinks about various different emotions, as to keep the narrative of the picture open ended. The uncertainty is what creates tension and conflict and ultimately leads to different perceptions in the viewers. Tarrats’s use of color, texture, and implied line further accentuate the tension of the image. All of these elements combined allow the viewer to develop a story expressive of their own emotions.
