37.) Ernie Button

Ernie Button’s subject matter in his photography varies, but he tends to focus on the individual nature of objects, and the unique qualities that each possesses. His photos provide a voice to objects that are often overlooked or taken for granted. Photography has taught Button a new approach to interacting with people, places and objects, and to look closely at them in an untraditional way.

The photos below are from his “Vanishing Spirits” series. What inspired these images was Button’s observation of a film on the bottom of a glass that previously had Single-Malt Scotch in it, after it went through the dishwasher. He discovered that when the alcohol dried it left the sediments in various patterns. Every time the Scotch dried, it left a slightly different pattern. To bring the patterns to life, Button adds colored light to the bottom of the glass. The resulting images are beautiful illusions of terrestrial and extraterrestrial landscapes.
