40.) Gary Cawood

In his series “Night Patrol”, Gary Cawood photographs abandoned parts of small towns during the dark hours of the night. It is a tour of the ordinary things we experience without noticing. We become accustomed to the way things look during the day, but when one visits a familiar place at night, details emerge from the shadows that alter our previous understanding of the nature of that place.

For this series, Cawood is gravitated towards the deserted parts of town because he believes they tell a more powerful story about the past. His photographs don’t necessarily tell a complete narrative, they rather pose questions about the mystery of an empty street at night. The striking contrast of the light and shadows combined with the isolation within the image create an unsettling mood, and makes the viewer wonder why these places are so deserted.
