Douglas Levere photographs extreme closeups of snowflakes and working in Buffalo NY provides him with no shortage of snow. He uses a digital SLR camera with a 5x microscope lens and an adapted microscope base to capture the unique minute details of single microscopic snowflakes. Levere is fascinated by the strength and elegance of these tiny subjects, and braves countless cold nights to capture their beauty.
We have always heard that no two snowflakes are exactly alike, but we don’t truly understand what that means until we see individual snowflakes up close. Upon precise observation we can see that the arms of each snowflake resemble the veins and growth of leaves. Although these tiny particles are not alive, they somehow extrude a living energy. Levere’s photos capture the charm and elegancy of the tiny frosty beings, and inspires the viewer to pay close attention to the little things in life, for upon close inspection, one will find an intricate world that they never knew existed.
